The Reading Room · Hazel Reads Three
Prize season
The ones the judges couldn't stop arguing about.
Book 1 The True True Story of Raja the Gullible
Rabih Alameddine
READ IT A philosophy teacher and his sharp-tongued, dying mother, told with enormous heart. This year's National Book Award, and it earns every inch. Read it.
Book 2 Land
Maggie O'Farrell
READ IT Buried treasure, overlapping lives, an ancient wood that won't stay quiet. O'Farrell, gorgeous and haunted. Read it.
Book 3 The Director
Daniel Kehlmann
FOR SOME A filmmaker keeps working under the Nazis, one small compromise at a time. Brilliant, and deliberately cold. For some.
Now tell me what you’re reading. Have you read any of these? Or something better? Bring it to the Reading Room.
