The Reading Room is a place of discovery before it is a place of commerce. Every book on every shelf is chosen editorially, because a character would own it, argue about it, or give it to someone who did not ask. A recommendation here is earned, never bought.
Every title appears because it belongs on that shelf and nowhere else. Inclusion is never paid placement. No publisher, no author, and no seller can buy a book onto a shelf, whatever it would pay.
The shelves are organized by person, and each person reads differently. Hazel issues verdicts, Blanche records encounters, Dorothy draws the lines between traditions, and Herbert declines to explain himself. The list is the character, and the note beside each book is written in her own voice.
A shelf is a living thing. Books are added as the characters read them, and a shelf you visit twice is not the same shelf. Nothing here is ever finished.
