Hand-riveted copper lanterns, gas and electric, made in the French Quarter since 1945. The entry lantern, the porch light, and the copper sconce, a live flame behind glass. It is the hometown story told in light, the way Krewe of New Orleans tells it in eyewear. Blanche’s own hangs outside the Vineyard house, by the pool, a copper flame against the dark water.
Blanche’s rule holds here, never the harsh overhead as a room’s working light. The lamp is lit before the room is entered, warm and low and at the height of a seated eye, the afternoon light she has been chasing with candles for decades. A chandelier earns its place only as the jewelry of a room, never its work light, and always on a dimmer.
